SA Algae Bloom Update

Australian Sailing is continuing to closely monitor the naturally occurring algae bloom currently affecting parts of South Australia's coastline. This bloom, dominated by the microalgae Karenia mikimotoi, has been present in various areas since March.

South Australian Government Department of SA Health advise the algae does not produce toxins dangerous to people but can cause short-term irritation in some people depending on local conditions.

Symptoms caused by algal particles include:

  • Skin irritation (swimming)
  • Eye irritation (swimming or sea spray)
  • Cough and shortness of breath (aerosols carried on the wind or sea-spray).

Symptoms resolve within a few hours after moving away from impacted waters and that there are no long term impacts.

Please refer reference link to SA Heath.

The SA Government continues to monitor and test water quality at multiple sites, provide public health advice, and display signage where necessary.
