QAS Head Coach Shane Smith leads a stellar lineup of coaches for Youth Sail Qld!

Published Tue 22 Jun 2021

The Coaching Clinic as part of Youth Sail Qld is shaping up to be a fabulous opportunity to rub shoulders and learn from some exceptional coaches.  Australian Sailing Team member Joel Turner who sails the 49er and Fast Track Nacra 17’s Australian Coach Carolijn Brouwer are joining us this year.  Their experience in sailing and coaching is extensive and we welcome them to the Coaching Team for 2021:

Joel  is an Australian 49er sailor, based on the Gold Coast. He was first introduced to sailing in 2003 at eight years of age; and has been a strong advocate and competitor for the sport ever since. Joel has a wide range of experience, he has previously sailed and competed to a national and international level on boats such as the Sabot, 29er, 49er, match racing, M32, extreme 40 and offshore racing. Joel’s passion for sailing has also lead him to an interest in wanting to share his knowledge in a coaching role. He has taught around Australia to a large number of youth classes over the past eight years.  To provide some examples of this, Joel has worked with the Queensland Sailing Team, SYC Performance Program, Sydney 18 footers and the Queensland Academy of Sport. Joel’s life experiences as a sailor from a young age became part of his reason to start coaching, as he strives to assist younger athletes through the learning process and make less mistakes than those he had to go through. He also has a keen interest in helping youth sailors develop into mature adults and athletes generally.

Carolijn is an international yachtswoman with a background in both Olympic sailing and Ocean racing. She was born in the Netherlands but spent most of her childhood growing up in Brazil, where she found her passion for sailing. Carolijn is the only woman to have competed in 3 Olympic Games in 3 different disciplines. Her 3rd Olympics in Beijing in 2008 she was the only female skipper in the Open Tornado multihull fleet. After two full female ocean race campaigns, she sailed the last edition of the Ocean Race onboard Dong Feng Race Team in a mixed configuration making her one of the first two women to ever win the Volvo Ocean Race. Carolijn is an adventurous type, she is very competitive and loves challenges. She is known for raising the bar high not only for herself but also for the people she surrounds herself with, making her a real team player.
