2023 ZHIK YOUTH SAIL SA Youth Championship

Published Tue 28 Nov 2023

What a fantastic weekend… The 2023 ZHIK Youth Sail SA Youth Championships were over the two-day weekend of the 25th and 26th of November and brought together youth sailors from across the state.

84 Sailors competed in the event hosted by the Brighton & Seacliff Yacht Club.  The sailors represent regional clubs Port Lincoln Yacht Club, Goolwa Aquatic Club, Clayton Bay Boat Club, and metro clubs Largs Bay Sailing Club, Brighton & Seacliff Yacht Club, Henley Sailing Club, and Adelaide Sailing Club.

The week leading in was not looking promising for the weather, and thankfully, we ended up with a full series of races with 8 on the Open Course with fleets of 420, ILCA 4, ILCA6, International Cadets and Optimist Open and Intermediate. Great results and a solid weekend of racing for our Optimist Green Fleet, completing 12 races.

We are very grateful to have amazing people in our sport as officials, volunteering their time to youth sailing in South Australia with NRO Marcus Copper leading the open course with RO Laura Hughson and On Water Jury with Wayne Thompson.

The Brighton & Seacliff Yacht Club team of volunteers had every base covered on and off the water and showed a welcoming and great regatta vibe.

The Optimist Green Fleet was the biggest fleet, consisting of 17 sailors starting the journey from club sailing into state level sailing. Lead on the racecourse by RO Lisa Brock and head coach Brett Yardley. A 12-race series was completed, and nothing but smiles.  The fleet wrapped up presentations with awards for all sailors and a new group of interclub friends.
