What is School Team Racing?

What is Secondary School Team Racing?

A teams racing team will usually consist of three boats per team with two teams competing against each other in one race, lasting about ten to fifteen minutes.

All teams will race against each other in the regatta and the winner is the team with the most points. In bigger regattas the two top teams may race up to five races together in a finals round to decide a winner.

Teams racing requires good knowledge of the rules of sailing and superb boat handling skills.

In South Australia we have approximately 16 schools across metro and country regions, entering up to 24 teams, made up of around 190 students altogether.

The season runs from November to April, with several trial events being held, followed by metro and regional championships, with the season culminating in all the teams coming together at a state championship.

The best performing teams at the state championship are selected to represent SA at the national competition and can go on to sail at the Interdominions which is an annual regatta in which Australia versus New Zealand.
