SA Sailing Team

Background

The South Australian Sailing Team program(s) aims to be the leading providers of high performance sailing programs in South Australia for talented athletes enabling them to achieve national and international success.

The SA Sailing Team is the underpinning program to the State Sailing Performance Program (SSPP - SA) and is managed & funded by Australian Sailing (AS). Both programs operate under the SA Sailing Team banner.

Objectives

The objectives of the SA Sailing Team are to:

  • Develop the skills of talented youth sailors to help them succeed at interstate level competition.
  • Achieve selection into the Australian Youth Sailing Team to represent Australia at the World Sailing Youth Championships.
  • Provide access to the High Performance Pathway structure. Set examples and inspire junior & youth sailors.

The SA Sailing Team provides squad based coaching support for identified athletes selected from designated junior and youth classes. Athletes are educated about the SSPP to enable a smooth transition into that program should a sailor qualify for this support in future years.

Preliminary Classes for 2018-19 are: Optimist, Laser 4.7, Laser Radial and 420

Structure

Coaching will be managed by Alex Zimmermann SA State Performance Coach and conducted in collaboration by other experienced Australian Sailing coaches to ensure a world-class training program for athletes to develop the skills required to perform at national level and be in consideration for an SSPP or SASI Scholarships in the future.

The minimum contact days (training and events) for 420’s and Laser (4.7 & Radials) will be 40,  Optimist 20.

The cost of the program includes a Zhik cap, t shirt, long sleeve rashie and bib.

The program will go into recess following the Australian Youth Championships in Jan 2019 until the next edition commences in Apr/May 2019.

Accommodation and supervision outside of the actual training and racing sessions is not provided at camps or regattas.

Selection to the 2018-19 Sailing Team is via application.

Sailors must advise the AS Performance Pathway Officer – SA of their acceptance of an offer by the due date specified in the Letter of Offer.
